Of Light and Sound

I'm not as into music as some people I know. I listen to the radio or something while driving, but that's maybe 20 minutes a day and can include news or commercials. I don't have theme music in my head for most characters I create and usually struggle when asked about it. I don't have explicitly favorite genres even if I have biases that tend to make some more appealing. There are a couple things that automatically earn points with me: - Music with a beat that makes me want to move - Understandable lyrics that evoke some emotion or story That in mind, I was a little blown away a while back when I came across the video for Starlight Brigade . The music's solid. The lyrics literally tell a story. The animated video ties it all together and weaves it into a Voltron-esque anime series condensed down to high points in a four-minutes music video. The Miyazaki/Ghibli-inspired art style is a plus, too. I give kudos to all involved, but I'm super-impressed by  Kni...

Thoughts...

I thought about commenting on the 38 Studios situation back when it started, and the news of SWTOR layoffs and server consolidation, but I feel like most of what I was thinking at the time has been said and/or played out already elsewhere. Video games can be big, and rough, business. SWTOR will probably carry on for a fair while with its million-plus subscribers and do reasonably well, but it's no more a WoW-killer than Rift or Warhammer Online or... whatever else. Then there's an Elder Scrolls MMORPG in the works, though I can't fathom why. And some recent posts took me to a Kickstarter page for Pathfinder Online, which surprised me. They're gathering money to make a demo to show to investors? Huh. From the news bits I saw about features the game meant to include, I thought they were a lot further along than that... Meanwhile, Diablo 3 is a shining star/depressing symbol. I think the 6+ million sales (plus another million and change "given away" with WoW ...

On Music

A couple months back, I was gifted with a bunch of mp3s and almost immediately asked which was my favorite. Aieee! The problem with that approach is that I really don't listen to music that much. It's generally out of the question at work. At home, I don't often have dedicated listening time. I can put it on while I'm doing other things, but then it's background noise I'm not paying attention to, making it easy to miss songs and hard to critique them. Ultimately, I usually only end up listening to five or six songs a day at the most while driving to and from work. And then, they have to be in a format that I can play in the car (which will play mp3 files, but only from CD). In the end, the answer was Blackmore's Night's Under a Violet Moon. The process got me thinking a little about what I like in music these days. It's got a nice beat that draws you in, that's good. The lyrics are pleasant and generally understandable, that's a plus. The...
