April 1: Had To Be There

Okay, I've seen some cute things popping up online over the course of the day, sure. I might even go so far as to call a few of them funny . But the highest scorer so far on the amusement/laughter scale for me might actually fall flat on people who have never played WoW. 'tis the listed 6.0 patch notes .

April Fools Hijinks

So I noticed the coming of April 1st with a little trick by DBM (a WoW addon) playing random sound bytes from the game upon login/zone-in. A quick search even turned up a manual command for that. Cute. And before I turned in, I also saw Cartoon Network replacing its usual late Saturday/early Sunday programming with an old(er)-style Toonami block, including use of the host TOM and his giving a review of Mass Effect 3. Of course Blizzard has to get in on things, with the Starcraft 2 Supply Depot game. One of the bullet points for the game: "Multiple endings, each influenced by your choices and color-coded for your convenience! (Further epic endings planned for post release as downloadable content.)" Also a revamp of classic educational games in Blizzard Kidzz and young adult novels as well as a Zergotachi authenticator (keep it healthy and happy or it won't give you the whole code). I wasn't sure if SWTOR would get in on it, but hey, play a ship droid! Googl...

Another April Fool's Day

Well, let's see... Massively saved me a lot of effort by doing a roundup of MMO-related foolishness . Crabby, the dungeon helper, is cute. Of them all, I think I'm inclined to give kudos this year to the Guild Wars team with their commando class for GW2 - partly because that just looks neat and partly because they went the extra mile and put them in GW for a holiday event. It's just a short quest, and you don't get a rifle, but you get to play as a commando through a mission helping someone from the future save Gwen's mother Sarah from an Annihilator robot sent back to kill her. Blizzard also has motion sensitive console Starcraft 2 and a Horadric Cube app which needs to be real (the disclaimers are worth it alone). White Wolf has a Paths of Storytelling supplement for Vampire. Sequential Art puts out its last comic ever and reveals all. Google gets in on the motion-sensing wave of technology and lets your manipulate your email with body language as wel...

Foolishness

So let's see what we have today: Google has changed its name to Topeka , rather than the other way around. And Google UK seems to have an animal translation service in the works. Diablo 3 has gamer snuggies and Deckard Cain voiced GPS . For WoW, we have a Battle.net neural interface , the new EPEEN system (love how it filters out those beneath your notice), and a Battle.net matchmaking site . Strangely, I don't see anything up for Starcraft 2. Hmm... yet? I preferred White Wolf's Exalted release last year, but they continue in a similar vein with Dudes of Legend: How To Be Fucking Awesome . WoW.com seems to be going through phases of covering everything but World of Warcraft today. Mass Effect, Twilight, Lady Gaga... Meanwhile, WoWWiki seems to be running with upside-down pictures for the day. City of Heroes announces the option to play a sidekick . "Your character levels up by screwing up." Or in Star Wars: The Old Republic, maybe play a sar...

April First

Ah, but for the good ol' days. Wizards of the Coast isn't what it used to be. They've got a fake page "overlay" on the D&D site and an announcement about a Pirates versus Ninjas deck , but that's about it. Some others remain, though... Google retains its sense of humor with a plot to go to Mars. Blizzard's up to its old tricks. Starcraft II gets a new unit. Wrath of the Lich King is to have a new class, the bard. And they will introduce us to the 2-D glory of the Molten Core game! And, if that weren't enough, IGN has the premiere of the trailer for the Legend of Zelda movie. So now I'm decked out with all four Guild Wars boxes and the expansions. I still don't think I would have paid for them, but if access to that content is important to those I play with, I've nothing against accepting gifts. Each of these has come with a trial key for multiple NCSoft games. I passed one to gabefinder and kept one myself to try something ...
