The Root of All Evil

Whether money or the love of, I've had various thoughts bouncing around for a while... - Some have come up pretty recently. At work, a few of us have been scrambling for the last handful of months trying to set up a new advertising/accounting system. We are supposed to go fully live with it this coming week and the sales team is only just getting into it because... well, "we don't have time" translates to me as closer to "we have no initiative." I can't be too critical. I don't realistically expect people to sink their own time after hours into such things, but I still feel frustrated when others have to be pulled kicking and screaming into something I've already been pushed into. What this really means, though, is this last week we've found a lot of problems we didn't foresee when it was just a few people with admin rights working in the system. A lot of the new stuff amounts to procedures that need to change, but one thing that's co...

Reality

Ah, it's that time again - distant friends with constant money problems time. Kyn's still on the ropes without a job. He started off the week learning his renter's insurance is auto-billing to an account he opened before leaving Washington which is now overdrawn close to $60, to only get worse every day. Urgh. I sent some money and advised him to close the account and get the automatic billing changed elsewhere or stopped outright, whatever is appropriate. And Kit's in a tizzy over a credit card which... I don't have all the details on. Somehow he owes $2900 on it, was expecting to pay 2% of the balance per month, but ended up being charged 5% of the balance instead? Either way, that's a horrible way to float some debt and accrue interest charges on the balance, no doubt. Somehow he didn't even see this as a problem beforehand, which is what really baffles me. It's just... facepalm-worthy. Oh, but I'm sure he still wants to spend the money to g...

Mind on Money

It's a little strange to me, but several money-related issues have come to my attention and been on my mind over the weekend. Potentially ranty... Commissioned Artists A post over on Furaffinity was pointed out that spoke about commissioned art and prices. Largely, it seemed to be making the points that 1) artists often don't charge enough for their time, and 2) commissioners should understand this and be willing to pay more. Those are some valid points, but the post was horrible narrow in its view. The assumption seemed to be that every piece of commissioned artwork ought to earn at least minimum wage, based on X hours available and so on. It sort of ignores that some percentage (I want to say a majority, but I guess I don't know that) of artists have an actual job as well. If art is one's hobby, then making any money at it is more profitable than how a lot of us spend out time outside work. It also ignores that art is very much a luxury item, the market ruled by...
