Words on Some Mobile Games
So with a Nexus 7, I finally got introduced to the world of mobile device games. Whee? I picked up Angry Birds: Star Wars quickly enough. Simple, but not very engrossing for me. I also picked up Ayakashi Ghost Guild, a "collectable card" game of sorts to check out, and a bit later Transformers Legends, in the same genre. Difference models and different experiences with those two, though they shared much of the same format - cards of characters with levels of rarity and power, use of cards to level up others, a limited form of PVP against other people's decks, limited-period events with special rules and such in place...
With Ayakashi, I sort of got into it for a while, but after a month or two ran into an effective ceiling for free players. Attribute points start out as a limit to your ability to use your best cards at once, but after enough levels, it's more a lack of cards that have high enough requirements to use all your attack/defense spirit. And higher-requirement cards tend to be higher rarity, which you could luck out on, but realistically? Not so much. You can't perform well enough in the events to get the good reward cards without ridiculous luck, time involvement, or spending money on the special cards. And it just never pulled me in enough to spend money, so... I sorta reached a point where I'm effectively "done."
Transformers Legends doesn't have the spirit limits, but it has become more and more event-based. And the events are sort of high-pressure. If you want a "good" reward out of an event, you need to be in the top 5000, or 1500, or 100 (for the best) players by points at the end. And there's a definite advantage to using the paid (but still random) summons to get the special event-boosted cards to play with. You can do decently, but not great, if you merely spend every waking moment trying to get some advantage in the events that are running just about every week now (when they were every month or more to start with). That's... too much pressure to pay, too much pressure to play, and... I think I'm going to have to uninstall it to avoid it completely. There's a temptation there that I just can't let myself get drawn into.
