Ant-Man

Here's a movie that I wasn't sure I was going to see. On the up side, the Marvel CU movies have been generally pretty good and doing well. On the other hand, that doesn't necessarily mean I have to go watch them all.

All in all, though, it's another pretty good movie. The action's decent. The main "power" premise didn't bother me in the way I think it might, even though the movie plays pretty fast and loose with mass and momentum. The ants worked out better than I would have guessed. And while it didn't warm my heart the same way Guardians of the Galaxy did, there was a sense of fun and adventure and humor along the way.

A couple points, however, hold it back from being "great." I didn't find the main villain very compelling, myself. Also, the whole underlying plot of family issues felt clunky. Maybe there just wasn't enough screen time to flesh it all out, but things are just resolved a little too rapidly there to feel real and moving.

Still, it was worth the watch.

  1. The critics I tend to lend an ear to are calling Ant Man the best Marvel movie since Avengers 1 or Guardians of the Galaxy depending on your leaning. I'm not sure I wholly agree, as I found it enjoyable and great at times, (I love the action scenes on the small scale the pull back to show the real world, like the Yellowjacket being hit by the toy train) but maybe not the best. I dunno, what's been out since Avengers? Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Cap 2, GotG, X-Men: Days of Future Past (Not Disney-Marvel, but still a Marvel franchise), Avengers 2. I'd place this one around Winter Soldier, maybe a little less. Dunno.

  2. Well, opinions vary. ;) GotG has a special place in my heart for being the right thing at the right time that, for its flaws, literally made me feel as though a bit of joy and soul had been restored unto me. Avengers was so amazing because it pulled off a comic book crossover team-up on the big screen in a way that basically seemed impossible before. Those two set the bar really, really high in my book.
