SWTOR Anew
When tashiro said he could run a Star Wars game online, I said "sure?" 'cause, hey why not? That's young yet, with some revamped older characters done anew in some cases. So far, my poor little captain is upset that her precious ship has been attacked and life generally seems to be going downhill since taking a contract with Jedi. Heh.
Thinking about Star Wars again got me to reinstall SWTOR with intent to maybe pursue some of those stories I didn't finish and such. I expected going in that there would be some shock from feature-loss. I was a subscriber at one time, so that makes me now a owner of a "preferred" account rather than a completely free one, but there are still a number of options I don't have that I did as a subscriber back when that was the only option. I might miss toolbars, though hopefully four is enough. I wasn't over the limit of character slots, so that's something. Some customization options (fewer races and things like not being able to hide head gear) are minor annoyances.
The big two that I foresee, however, are XP and special "quest" limits. In playing previously, I was far more interested in class story than world stories and side quests (plus, those get repetitive, per faction). As with virtually any MMO, however, you have to do some of those side quests, at least, in order to keep pace level-wise with the story. Now, non-subscriber accounts apparently earn less experience (and it was described this way, not "subscribers earn more"), which means having to do even more. On top of that, non-subscribers are limited in the number of weekly dungeon and starship missions, apparently - which would be a place to earn some XP. Heck, I liked the starship missions, even if they were essentially an on-rails minigame. Coupled together, I suspect leveling a character is going to feel like a real slog.
So far, though, I haven't done much. Installation. I connected and found due to server merges and/or name reassignments, I'll need to rename my trooper. I've actually logged in with my agent, been spammed by a swarm of achievement messages (stuff that wasn't around when I last played), and walked around my ship. Movements still feels "stiff" to me - not in the sense that it's difficult, but character movement just feels subtly detached from surroundings and not-quite fluid enough. I haven't so much as visited another planet or engaged in combat. But the option is there, I suppose.
