The Alloy of Law

I've been waiting for this book for a while, and I'm not disappointed. Sanderson's Mistborn trilogy remains one of my favorites in recent years. I remember hearing he intended to do two more trilogies in the same world, one in a modern setting and one in the future, all with the same "magic" system.

When I heard about The Alloy of Law, I was a bit confused. It turns out this is the result of pondering the development of the world - a Western-era novel. I enjoyed it like the first trilogy. It's got a good mix of action, plot, and fun/interesting characters. I'm left a little bit confused by it, though, because there are dangling plot threads left that... seem to beg for continuance in the short term. Certain elements could stretch off into the modern-era series, but there's implication that there is more to the story of at least the protagonist Waxillium. So I wonder if there will be direct follow-up...

While the original trilogy focused on Mistborn (Allomancers who can burn any metal) and those with single metal affinities, then heavily introduced Feruchemy and Hemalurgy in the second and third books, this novel features several "Twinborn" who have one Allomantic and one Feruchemical power each. That's interesting, especially how they play together. I do find some of the interactions odd, though. I tend to think of iron Pulling and steel Pushing as magnetic effect, though that might not be fully accurate. Aluminum is deliberately non-reactive to those powers, but I often found myself thinking about (real world) bullets typically being lead and casing being brass, yet both were commonly Pulled/Pushed. So did this world develop ferrous ammunition as standard use or do those powers actually affect most metals (but not aluminum for some reason) regardless of magnetic properties? I'm... guessing the latter, though I wonder if I should reread the original trilogy to look for confirmation.

The bits of religion are also interesting - with now-historical figures from the Final Empire showing up as icons of sorts, some of whom are still actually around in some form.

Now I just have to wait for more. *pout*
