(WoW) Tier 12 Comments

So... Firelands tier 12 armor has been mostly revealed. The Firelands theme shows through on most, if not all, sets. I like some better than others, but there are none of them that I actually dislike. I think it's been a while since that happened.

Of course, I focus on the paladin set as that's my main character. I think this sums it up in general pretty well. For plate armor, it looks heavy on the cloth - but there are plate-ish elements. I prefer pants to robes/dresses, but I'm okay with that style for paladins. Shoulders are flashy, but kinda cool. The masked look still seems a little unpaladinly to me, but it harkens back to the very memorable/distinctive tier 2 Justicar armor. All-in-all, 'tis fine.

It is however, sad that the most distinctive parts (shoulders and headgear) are alwasy the hardest to come by anyway.

If I could change one thing about the visual style, though, it would be to add some specifically-paladinly element to the design (of this set and all others to come). A badge/symbol of the Silver Hand (or Argent Crusade even) would be nice. A tome on a chain (though this would mean added dimension to the model and might be avoided due to clipping issues) would be awesome.

But I'll settle for armor that I don't find ugly. ;)

    Hm. Now you have me thinking. Cataclysm brought players back to Azeroth, albeit changed, and gave us a new enemy in the form of one of the oldest threats in Lore, Deathwing. The black dragons are the big bads once again and the elementals are right up their with them. The first WoW raids were Onyxia (Black dragon), Neferian (Black dragon) and Ragnaros (Elemental Firelord). Tier 2 paladin was that justicar set with a faceplate. Tier 12 paladin is a harkening back to those days. Tier 2. Tier 12. Will Tier 13 then harken back to our Naxxaramus gear? While I would initially say no because Tier 7 was Naxx gear recolored and detailed up, it might just bring that Silvery Hand/Argent Dawn theme to bear. Brave paladin fighting against fearsome dragons to save the world? I'd hope the Argents would be assisting despite Tirion sort of having his spotlight through later Wrath.

    I'm pretty sure they won't copy it as closely as Tier 7 did. My... instinct says they're not paralleling the current sets that deliberately to the past. I think Tier 12 armor has a much stronger "Firelands" theme (especially for some other classes) than it has a "Tier 2" theme. But I haven't compared the other classes' armor, so it could be that there's some deliberate effort to tie into old elements that I'm not catching. On a side note, I'm a little bit sad that I never got to wear Justicar armor. One of the things that makes it so striking and memorable is the sheer contrast of the color scheme, and we don't get much of that anymore.

Adventures in Rokugan (ongoing)

 So, yeah, I'm terrible at keeping up with between-session conversations and all the piles of possible channels/servers in Discord - especially when work gives me some time to think, but not Discord access. I believe a question was posed about thoughts on the state and future of the Adventures in Rokugan game, though, so here goes... In general, I'm enjoying the time and look forward to it more than feel burdened by it. The start time is a little earlier than ideal, but I don't mind making it work on Saturdays. Harbinger of Chaos (Godbound)

 Last night seemed to be the climactic finale of the ongoing Godbound game. I have some thoughts. The previous session ended with a couple PCs and a shadowy person in the special chamber with access to divine realms and their vacated thrones (in the campaign, the gods were sorta kicked out of their positions, making things up for grabs). Once PC had already claimed a throne. All the others were waiting outside. At the moment the session ended, no one seemed aware that the shadowy figure was Beryn, big-bad threat of the campaign. This is where I feel weird about things, because that little detail came up OOC and it changed everything. If the PCs had been aware at the time, they probably would have started a fight outside the chamber when they saw him. That didn't happen. But suddenly because the players were aware, they wanted to be able to plan before the conflict (with downtime glossed over previous) so they could go into the next session guns-blazing and as prepared as possible.

RPG Desires?

 So I was asked last night what I actually want in an RPG game/campaign. I came up with a few points, but that's a question I find hard to answer on the spot. It's easy to point at things in an ongoing game that I don't like, and a little harder to point at things I do (darn negative-focused psychology), but making generalizations is more difficult still. It does, however, give me something to focus a little on and ramble about for a time... Story I like a narrative through line - not usually to the point of "railroading," but I want more connective tissue than just returning to a job board after each mission. Sometimes that develops as things go, with character goals shaping things. Setting an end goal at the outset ("defeat the demon lord!") can have ups and downs.
