Aerial Dreaming
Had an interesting dream this morning...
It was something of an alternate World War II, with the conflict being drawn out and becoming a bit more of a cold war with Miyazaki influences. I was an Allied pilot in something of a light bomber/large recon plane, cocky and gifted at flying, but probably co-pilot to the more technical and by-the-book pilot/navigator. Looking for a missing aircraft designer, we were shot down by a canon hit over an Axis base. The two of us, along with our mechanic/comm person fell out of the debris only to land on the prototype craft made by the person we were looking for.
The thing reminded me a little of White Knight (the carrier for Spaceship One) with the sort of "outrigger" hulls on either side of the main one, but much larger and bulkier (thus getting into the Miyazaki-style airships) while still being somehow faster/better than anything of a comparable size. I struggled with a German soldier on while trying to remain on the outside of the craft, almost falling off a few times, but winning through. I also somehow met up with a girl there who struck me as a combination between San (wild, almost feral girl from Princess Mononoke) and Nausicaa (talented pilot and gifted at reading the wind).
We landed at the Axis base and were taken prisoner. The commander there, however, decided not to kill us, but rather to make use of us in an upcoming international air race of some sort. It required teams comprised of a medium and a large-class aircraft. He was planning to use the professor's new prototype and some ancient (yet advanced) bomber he had restored that was "not as fast as the prototype, but still faster than anything else in its class." In the meantime, he talked with me and ended up sending me back to his second with a note to check out a light fighter so I could show off what aerobatics I could do and prove my usefulness. The dream me was actually getting into it, even while wanting to get away from the "bad guys" eventually with my crew, friend, and the professor when the opportunity came up.
It's one of those stories I wish I could have seen through in its entirety.
