Ranting

Heh. I have You Know My Name in my head - the song from Casino Royale . How is it that some people rub others the wrong way ALL the time? For me, these people generally come across as abrasive, inconsiderate, and obscenely self-centered no matter what they're saying. They demand attention, and I can't fathom why they get it because I just feel a nearly-overwhelming urge to tune them out completely. They show up and expect people to be interested in whatever they have to say - even if they're interrupting something else. Why does anyone feel that entitlement? I just don't get it, and it pisses me off when I see it. Thankfully, I don't have to deal with people like this often.

Casino Royale

Just got back. Good movie. Pretty much everything I'd read about it was true - it's a darker, more serious Bond film. There's very, very little "gadget" use (though cell phones are big). Bond is less charming, but possessed of a more devious cunning. It feels a little long, but it works out okay. And the foot chase in the beginning - pretty incredible, impressive even considering how many takes they must have had to do. It was odd to not have female silhouettes in the opening credits, though. >.> Begin Tangent In discussion on the way back, it was pointed out that James Bond is something of an archtype these days: the eternal secret agent to be plugged into any era. Direct continuity need not apply. This spawns an amusing theory: James Bond is a Time Lord. Yes, Jame Bond of Gallifrey travels the timeline doing his secret agent business. With his trusty Aston Martin TARDIS (frequently repaired/replaced by Q), he still need to reincarnate in different b

Thanksgiving and Novel Perspective

Thanksgiving was good, though I'm wiped from it. Got up too early, drove more than I wanted to, had a little wine and (of course) turkey. My parents had some friends over, so we had six people and three dogs at their place. Still, it was pleasant enough. After getting home, I called my mom to get caught up there. Turns out she and my step dad moved from to Rapid City, SD a couple months back. News was slow in coming, and I had worried a little when I tried to call her for her birthday in September only to get a message about the phone number being disconnected. My half-sister's now living the post-high school, pre-college life: moved in with her boyfriend and his cousin, with friends who drop by frequently. She's been traveling around the region some of late, and is working a couple part-time jobs with some thoughts about college. --- On a completely different topic, I recently had something of a minor revelation regarding novels and perspective. I grew up mostly on fan

7th Sea update

Not much to report this week. Sebastian, not willing to trust any more people-turned-puppets, suggested renting a coach and the group safely reached the vineyard of Rufina's uncle Guido. Prompting Nina's Outlandish reference: "Is he a wild stallion guido?" it was, of course, a somewhat emotional reunion, though it could probably be played out in more detail. For the rest of us, the place appears to be a safe haven for the moment, giving a chance to rest. Elapsed Time: 'tis late in the day when the group settles in.

Back in the swing

We've been running into delays on and off the last few weeks, but thankfully got in a 7th Sea game Monday night. The morning after the rooftop combat and the fire, the party has mended their wounds to a degree and gathered their wits. Lucien is missing in, though his sword was found in the rubble of the neighboring building (as the player isn't playing that character anymore). And so Rufina has taken the blade and wants to get in touch with her half-remembered family. Over a somewhat awkward breakfast, Sylvia agreed to do things that way. The playwright the group came to Vodacce seeking has a nearby residence, though his primary estate is on another island apparently. Going to visit Rufina's uncle first is a detour - and the Eisen doesn't like that - but not too much of one. And, thanks to Sebastian's suggestion, it does allow time for a formal request for an audience to be sent to Horatio Caligari. No major action, though a bit of banter and much hugging by

Election Day

I'd have to say I've become less idealistic over the years - and more jaded. No surprise there, really. I voted early last week out of convenience. But these days I find that I care less about candidates than issues. I probably should do more research beforehand, I'll admit, but politicians mostly blend together in my mind. Instead I'm eager to weigh in on bond issues and whatnot - usually local items. Still... if you have the right to vote, you should exercise it.
