Double-*fwump*
It feels like the weekend was very long, just not in a good way.
Friday night I noticed my computer acting a bit odd in IE/OE. It would lock up (to the point of the cursor not moving with the mouse) at seemingly random moments when these programs were open. I didn't notice it at any other time, but I didn't go checking every program I could, either.
Saturday morning, it just plain didn't work. On bootup it would get to the Win XP loading screen, then restart. For a few tries, it would offer me the option of booting into safe mode every other restart. Then it even stopped doing that. I couldn't get into it too seriously due to a noon gathering for RP. That night, I fiddled and fussed for quite a while. I couldn't seem to repair Windows, so I ended up doing a new install. Gee, multi-booting to Win XP that works or Win XP that doesn't. Such options. I also had to reinstall pretty much everything. All the programs and drivers were there, but the new Windows install wouldn't recognize this fact by default. Suspiciously, the one program I had issues with putting back on was Norton Antivirus. It installed okay, but the auto-protect and e-mail scanning would not enable. A manually-initiated scan turned up nothing, however, so I'm still not sure what to make of that. Sadly, this ate up all the time I would have done anything online with Saturday night (20 MB of Windows updates takes a while over dial-up).
Sunday I went back at it. Unfortunately, while I was un/reinstalling NAV for the Xth time, Windows crapped out on me again with the same symptoms as before, putting me back at square one (or maybe two). On the up side, I pretty much knew what I had to do to get things functional from that point. I didn't bother with NAV and, on the off chance that it was involved, I didn't reinstall the latest Radeon driver either (which I adopted a couple weeks ago, I believe). So far, it works, but I'm still doing without dozens of tiny programs and settings that I've been accustomed to. I also ran into an odd situation by not finding any MS Office-related CDs. I know my computer had/has Word on it, but suddenly I'm not sure where it came from. Mrrf. So, anyway, that took up my entire day there. I ended up sleeping a couple hours early - a good choice after all the weekend stress. That must have helped, as I don't feel completely brain dead today.
Though... Saturday's game seemed to go pretty well, at least. Some characters are starting to show a little... well... character. I'm getting a little bit more into it myself. The PCs made progress in the direction I expected (as opposed to last week). I probably ought to get a touch more feedback from the players than I have been, but I feel things are gearing up on the right track at least.
