On warped mental anguish
I have a materialistically (is that a word?) competitive streak. It drives me not to be better than others, but to be the first to have something. Thankfully, it applies to things I'm interested in, like games. That's better than something like cars, right? And, while this might be positive in some lights, I consider it a negative trait in general.
This is why I drove to Farmington to buy Disgaea. This is why I picked up the D&D 3E core books immediately back when they first came out. And this is why FFXI is proving to be a personal (and very odd) torment.
It's out. I want it. I haven't bought it. This bugs me entirely too much. Logically, I should choose to avoid it for the same reason I've avoided previous MMORPGs - monthly fees. I never liked the idea of *buying* a game, then *paying* a subscription to keep playing it. I understand the business model. You can get constant improvements you couldn't in a "normal" game. I still don't like the idea. If MUCKing required monthly fees, you can bet I wouldn't be doing that.
The other drawback is my friends. I don't really know anyone else who's likely to play, and I suspect that is a common enough issue. The odd twist is that my RL friends aren't likely to care because it wouldn't impact my presence with them much, if at all, but my *online* friends are against the idea because it would likely bite into my MUCKing time. This seems to me like it should be the other way around.
Can I resist? That remains to be seen.

In other news, home life seems to be going fairly well. There are a few minor house issues (sealing the door better, looking into using that wood stove, figuring out how to move the darn toilet in order to make sure it's sealed properly), but nothing too serious. I'm a little bothered by not having heard back as far as the attic goes. Hmm. Annoyance.
DSL seems to be available now. Heh. I wonder if that'll take three weeks to set up. I should look into it soon, though, as it shouldn't be much more expensive than having the second phone line (which wouldn't be needed if we can put both computers on DSL).
And I'm limping less. One foot still bothers me some, though I *think* it's getting better.
That's about it. All told, it could be a hell of a lot worse.

alright, I should just go read farther back in your journal, but I haven't gotten there yet... what happened to your feet? And I'd definitely recommend DSL- my roomie and I have it, and it's made life so much easier (and the connection so much faster) than dial-up... Anywho... I hope you're doing better with the repairs to your place than I am on the repairs to mine. This house has more issues than a used car! ;-) Good luck!
