Well, I'm officially in a pissy mood now, and it's all because I discovered something I probably shouldn't have.
Last night was largely unpleasant due to character relationship issues. Those don't bother me as much as they once did, though. Allowed a short period of time to step back out of character, I can brush off such things. The real test there comes when playing the character again. But that's quite beside the point today.
No... I came in to work for a while. There are just some things that can't easily be done during regular hours. So, I came in to upgrade our circulation software. Of course, I showed up a little early, considering - there were still people using that system. "No problem," I think to myself, there's a computer I want to check for possible viruses and another we're hoping to replace soon, so I need to look it over and make sure I know all the software that needs to be installed on the newer one. Simple enough.
As I'm checking programs, I found a few I hadn't accounted for. So, I decided to make myself notes. There was no note paper or writing utensils on the desk, so I opened the middle drawer. I grabbed a pencil and, in scanning the drawer for note paper, I see a pay stub.
Wages aren't super-secret, but they're general not something to discuss with anyone other than the employee and his/her supervisor. I certainly didn't go looking, but there before me is a display of how much this person is getting paid. More than me.
Normally, this wouldn't be an issue at all. I generally don't care what other people get paid. In this case, however, it bothers me. The person in question:
- has worked with the paper something like half as many years as I have.
- is doing the production department job that I used to do.
- does a half-assed job that frequently (almost every weekend, I'm told) requires someone to fix something he did anyway.
And this is deserving of more reward than I get? Hell, at the rate my raises have been going, it'll be three years before I match that. Maybe they hired him at a higher starting wage. Maybe it's due to the fact he have a supervisor who's a decently-caring human being, while I haven't had much of a supervisor the last 2-3 years. That could account for it, but still...
I can't help but feel royally shafted.

Perhaps you should ask them about giving you a raise. Not mentioning the pay stub thing, but just telling them what kind of work you've been doing. It sounds to me like you're pretty essential there.
ReplyDeleteCrud.. Damn it, I'd be pissed off too. I hear constantly about how much work you have to do, and this person's getting twice your paycheque? That's most certainly not fair, considering you've been doing the work of 2 to 3 people there almost, plus running yourself ragged, and doing weekends. *hugs* Yes, I'd be asking for a pay raise if I were you.
