Of Light and Sound

I'm not as into music as some people I know. I listen to the radio or something while driving, but that's maybe 20 minutes a day and can include news or commercials. I don't have theme music in my head for most characters I create and usually struggle when asked about it. I don't have explicitly favorite genres even if I have biases that tend to make some more appealing.
There are a couple things that automatically earn points with me:
- Music with a beat that makes me want to move
- Understandable lyrics that evoke some emotion or story

That in mind, I was a little blown away a while back when I came across the video for Starlight Brigade. The music's solid. The lyrics literally tell a story. The animated video ties it all together and weaves it into a Voltron-esque anime series condensed down to high points in a four-minutes music video. The Miyazaki/Ghibli-inspired art style is a plus, too.
I give kudos to all involved, but I'm super-impressed by Knights of the Light Table studio behind the animation with all the detail. I especially love the moments of seeing a character mirrored in the surface of these alien ships.

Yesterday, I caught mention of Magnum Bullets in context of being sort of cyberpunk-ish. I found the song and listened and indeed, that fit. It conjured up in my head a haunting little revenge tale. Then I recognized the vocalist as being the one that did Starlight Brigade, which led me to a music video with visuals by... Knights of the Light Table again. And boy does it come together.
The music weaves a definite atmosphere. The lyrics, and there aren't even all that many of them, evoke the bones of a descent into violence and revenge. But the visuals flesh all that out with an incredibly stylish story of anthropomorphic animals in a stratified society clashing in a way that very much fits the themes of cyberpunk.
It isn't quite as literal or detailed as Starlight Brigade, but the visual storytelling is still incredible. Even the largely-still scenes shown in the silent credits continue to further paint the picture of the story. That story may be tragic, but the crafting of it is a thing of beauty.
These folks are good.
