Avengers: Infinity War
So dense.
I'm repeating myself, but that's what I keep coming back to. There are a lot of character, there is a lot going on, and there is very little wasted time. It's less stunning to me than the first Avengers movie was, but I'm still impressed that it works. I feel like the characters were well-represented. Certainly, some are bigger factors in the movie than others, but I didn't find myself feeling favorites of mine were being short-changed. In a movie of such magnitude, that's no mean feat.
So, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I keep asking myself, however, if I consider it "good." I acknowledge a difference in those two metrics. One of my usual criteria for quality of a book/movie is how it stands on its own, even if it's part of a series. Here, I find myself utterly incapable of making a judgment in that regard. I can't wrap my head around picturing what this movie would look like to someone who knows nothing of the MCU. I think a lot of important things are there, but the movie is so much about tying together threads from the other movies that it would certainly lose something without that foundation.
Probably more than any movie in the MCU or really any movie in recent memory, this one makes me want to see what comes next. The "direct" sequel is about a year again, though, so... agony of waiting! Aieeee!
Edit: You know, I find myself thinking about what else I can say that isn't spoilery because spoilers are easy. And though most who would read this have seen it now, I still don't want to get into those details. I do remember now that I was a little put off by the excessive nanotech "magic" suits. I liked the Ironman suits that have a little bulk to them over the newer "forms out of nowhere" stuff - that's neat, but it isn't as convincing to me. And while T'Challa's suit in Black Panther looks like it had some fabricy bulk and some depth to the ridges/pattern in it, there are several scenes in Infinity War where it looks simply like cloth with a pattern printed on it - none of that layered depth to it that made it look like it could be some sort of armor rather than just form-fitting spandex. It's a minor thing, but it is a negative in my book.
