Game Briefs

A couple more thoughts...

7.3 in WoW is a goddamn playground for my paladin main. The story feels almost as much like an extension of the paladin campaign as it does the main Legion storyline. And while I'm a little annoyed at the density of enemies, I have had zero issues taking them on. Level 112 rare? Oh, that'll take a while to burn down, but I'm not going to die. Pull 8-10 normal enemies? Inconvenient to wrangle together, but again not a lethal threat. I'm sure other class/specs work just fine as well, but protection paladin feels almost ideal.

I managed to squeeze in about half an hour with the Destiny 2 beta this morning. That was just enough time for me to finish the initial mission, skipping some of the cut scenes. Overall, it looks and plays pretty good. Of course, a beta doesn't necessarily accurately reflect the final product, but I do some some criticisms.
For a new player, there was very little explanation of how to play. "Super charged." Okay, but I had to go into the key mappings to find out how to use it. No special ammo? Uhh, that shotgun was a special weapon? Okay... Finding out the hard way that there's an insta-kill mechanic in one of the battle areas (avoided by an NPC's shield) and the avoid-the-rotating-death jumping bit weren't exactly fun parts because they weren't well telegraphed. I also don't like the feel of the Titan class' boosted jump - there's a feeling of vulnerability and helplessness while drifting.
Overall positive experience, but there are some things that could be improved upon. A better intro/tutorial to abilities and their use would solve a lot of it right off.

  1. After boosting your jump to float, you can tap the jump key again to drop down. I had to look into the keybindings myself to remember ho0w to use my Super. You also can "switch specs" on the character screen. If you poke the little diamond in the upper left, it tells you about the spec you're in and the other diamond behind it is the class' other spec

    1. Really? Holy cow. Guess I never tried past double-jumping. Had no idea you could drop down. Also the spec-switching, though I had read today that's an option somewhere.

The beta is an okay little view of how the game plays. It is utterly terrible as a tutorial/introduction, though. I feel that's kind of a shame, considering this will be the first exposure for a lot of non-console players. Kind of a rough first impression, and I hope the actual game has something a little more friendly.

  2. So I also found all three classes have some choices in their boosted jumps - the ability to jump higher or have more directional control - that are selectable. They still seem to vary some between classes, but there's the ability to fine-tune more than just "drift slowly in the direction you were going" that was default for the titan.

After trying the other two characters through the intro, I think I sort of like the feel of hunter best, though it also seems the least "party friendly" with a dodge ability whereas a titan puts down cover and warlocks drop a circle of healing (or damage boosting) that can benefit others. Relatively squishiness between the three really didn't feel like a factor, but that's just through twenty minute or so of fairly straightforward/scripted play. I could see the open world zones with actual drops and levels feeling different.

I'll probably buy it, but I'm not pre-ordering yet. I may see what the reviews say after the console release to get a better feel.

    1. Valid assessment. I might pick it up, though doubt I'll be able to play with Wade (as he'll likely snag the PS4/XBOne version)
