Frowny with Considerations

I have reflected before on a certain quirk of my psyche that leads me to often abandon things before getting into them. On could argue it saves me from a lot of mistakes in life. One could also argue it prevents me from living.

Most recently, this hit me when conversational mention with my hair stylist about an upcoming trip to Denver Comic Con got me thinking of what would be involved in putting together a cosplay... costume (costume, outfit, or does "cosplay" work to describe the ensemble itself?) in the couple months before then.

A couple ideas came to mind - either Mandalorian armor (such as it is) or perhaps something from Mass Effect (N7 armor is reasonably popular). Both have the advantage of not necessarily being a specific character, but still being fairly recognizable. A little research online, and there are some guides and patterns of sorts available to varying degrees.

Could I pull that off between now and then? Weigh my lack of experience in the field versus abundance of online resources. My lack of a "life" outside work means a good bit of potential time if I really sank my teeth into a project like that. It seems plausible, at least.

But would I be satisfied with it? Hmm. That's harder to judge. I would not want to strut around in something that looks like an off-the-shelf Halloween costume. Looking at some of the Mandalorian costuming out there, I find myself dissatisfied with the look. For example, especially on the right of this photo the suits look like little more than rigid, probably plastic, plates attached to clothing. While, honestly, Boba Fett didn't look much better in detail, it doesn't exactly convey to me "effective armor" even in a fantasy setting. >.> But... There's more appealing stuff out there, and I've already seen some techniques that put ideas in my head for possible improvement. So... maybe?

Of course, there is a financial downside to all this. Between having just replaced a fire-hazard of a range and with the cost of the convention trip itself looming, I'm reluctant to embark on a project that would likely run at least a few hundred dollars.

Would it be cool? Sure. Will I do it? ... My gut leans toward "no," and that becomes more likely every day. I have been making some conscious effort to say "yes" to things more - which is why I'm going to the convention at all. But... ehh...

  1. Maybe should have you contact Wade (Sangelic), as they do both Mando and N7 cosplay suits

  2. Curious. Not someone I've interacted with much over the years. Though my main problem* is convincing myself it's worthwhile to even start down that road. * Debatably not a problem, if it saves me investment of non-trivial amounts of time and money on something that would probably only collect dust outside of once or twice a year.
