(GW2) Heart of Thorns Announced
The team behind Guild Wars 2 hasn't been idle, with the Living Story releases and other patch changes, but almost two and a half years later, we get an announcement of the games first "real expansion." No release date yet, so it's early - my guess is we'll see it toward the end of the year. And while I'll probably pick it up, nothing I've heard really excites me.
So yeah, I'm still a jaded gamer. ;)
A new WVW map doesn't really mean anything to me, and doesn't immediately overshadow the one they've already added. The addition of guild halls is probably good (considering this is supposed to be a Guild Wars game), but I don't see much effect on play. New maps and content expanding into the jungle region won't hurt, though it remains to be seen how much there is. I expect a lot from an "expansion" given we've had zone maps added before in regular patches.
New ways to get precursors? That's probably one thing I most wanted in the game... almost two years ago. Now that I almost could acquire one anyway, it's sort of lackluster and I'm arguably more interested in mention of new legendaries entirely, but it remains to be seen if any of them appeal more. I've always wanted a shadow dagger, but the only legendary one was fiery.
Adding a new class is fine, but it sort of brings up the down side to preaching lateral over linear progression. There isn't really much incentive to play alts, and a new class doesn't do anything for existing characters. The class specializations could be interesting, but they sound suspiciously like 1) there's only one per class at this point and 2) they really aren't that much different from just another weapon and set of skills. If either of those hold true, I think I'll be disappointed.
I might be able to get into the idea of masteries, but they're so vague at this point that it's hard to render any sort of verdict either way.
So... ultimately a wait-and-see situation, which is usually the case with initial announcements like this.
