SWTOR and WOD
Attack of the acronyms!
So I received my message regarding "early access" to SWTOR today and can make characters for real, tonight. It seems a little odd to me, but I knew a couple people who are going to play, and I'm sure there are others I don't know as well... but I've seen no discussion among any of them as far as guilds and very little as far as servers (as the game is split into servers like many - but not all - major MMOs and the possibility of switching characters between servers is unclear at this stage). It appears I'll be making my Imperial Agent on the Canderous Ordo server (Edit: Of course, this one is 'full' and has a queue already) since a friend of a friend got said friend to make his Bounty Hunter there. Then again, there's so much potential for solo play that I'm not sure if I should even try very hard to group up.
I've further considered the possibility of a WOD MUCK character. I read through a lot of the Werewolf book and... eh... I feel a great disconnect in there somewhere. There's lots of talk about mythology and spiritualism and being more beast inside than man and so on, but the general portrayal is not so much "supernatural being blending in with humans" so much as "beast beset on all sides, at all times, by enemies spirit or physical." Seriously, the though of a territory as a neighborhood is hard for me to grasp when it seems almost assumed that Werewolves are going to get into knock-down, drag-out fights with regularity against spirits, possessed, and other Werewolves. Whether it's Lunacy or the Veil, you can only scatter body parts around a few square blocks a couple times before a neighborhood really starts attracting attention of the negative sort. And the main book has all of one or two lines in it that even acknowledge an Uratha might try to have a *gasp* job. Even urban-based Werewolves seem assumed to be gang members and scavengers who take or hunt what they need.
There's a supplement that addresses that a little bit more, but I still have trouble sinking my teeth into that when I sort of find the internal humans versus monster aspect more interesting than being a brutal spirit warden.
So I've gone to look back at the Purified in Immortal. They're similar in a lot of ways with their ties to the Shadow, but have less of the "rawr, I'm a monster" thing going for them. I have a half-formed concept that... might be something I could play, though it might take some finagling to make the Merits work. Though I still have the problem in that I don't really feel committed enough to things to make anything happen - which is sort of necessary for a good MUCK character. Some character motivation and goals, that's a good start, but am I - as a player - willing to put the effort into running scenes?
I'm not so sure there.
