A Bit More SWTOR
Another beta testing weekend, so I've managed to get in a little more play, though I think I may be about done for now. I wanted to see a little more of the post-prologue content, but time limitations and technical issues have effectively kept me to level 10 and under.
Big tech issue of the weekend for me? An inability to load into any of the characters I made last time. I keep seeming to freeze at the loading screen (for 20+ minutes at least) or getting bounced back to character select. New characters were not an issue, but this kept me from playing more of the trooper I'd already made. Disappointing. Otherwise, I saw some queues Friday and Saturday - something they still need to work on for release.
Played some Jedi Knight - reasonably standard "you seem to have great potential as a Jedi" stuff. Ran into one quest about two padawans in love. The light side option is to basically turn them in to their masters who are against the whole thing in an absolute "love is bad" way. That bugs me given precedent of the era (Sunriders, Revan and Bastila, etc.), but what can you do?
Played some Imperial Agent, which will probably be my "main" on that side. It wasn't as striking to me as the Trooper story, but I did find myself enjoying it more than what I've seen of the Force classes. Maybe it has something to do with the protagonist being portrayed as good by merit and accomplishment rather than "fate." Gameplay-wise, though, why is it that this is a cover-using class and yet I seemed to survive better (against similar groups/enemies) when I didn't use cover than when I did?
Really, though, I don't see much to add at this point. All my questions and concerns still pretty much remain in the realm of higher levels that I haven't seen yet.

Yeah, the "Love is Bad" thing just annoys the hell out of me.
ReplyDeleteThe way it felt, from third-person report, of the vibe you and Elly gave was that you seem like you are done and done with SW:tOR, even after launch you probably won't play it much.
ReplyDeleteI got to get further along with my bounty hunter. I could get him and my scoundrel from last time, just not my jedi or sith. Managed to get my own starship, that was pretty spiffy and reminded me of KotOR 1 & 2 Definately getting this game and playing. ;)
ReplyDeleteMy outlook has changed little since my guestimate a few months back (I think). I will buy it. I will pay monthly and without any recurring charges or I'll be watching closely at the end of my month(s) to determine if I want to keep up the subscription any longer. I don't expect to be paying/playing 3+ months from now. There are a couple stories that I would enjoy seeing through, but the gameplay to get there is standard MMO fare and that can get a bit old. The only elements that strike me as new thusfar are the focus on personal-level storytelling (whereas most MMOs have presented a more global/regional/factional story) and voice acting. The latter is a nice touch, but not a big selling point. The former... runs out eventually. Maybe that means running 8 characters to max level, but probably before then (due largely to repetition in the non-class quests). The only way I could see myself getting into SWTOR long-term would be if 1) the WoW guild collapsed, leaving me without ties there and 2) I had a stable set of friends to play with in SWTOR, because I'm convinced endgame content will be far more group-oriented. This seems an unlikely combination to me now, thus my expectations.
ReplyDeleteOkay, technically I was able to run with the Jedi Knight I made last time around, but I'd only just created her then - hadn't done any quests previously. So at about what level did you get a ship? Most classes seem to get their first companion around the level 7-10 range. I seem to recall the max level is something like 50?
ReplyDeleteI get where it comes from, and I can understand to a degree, but... it feels to me like the whole aversion to attachment should develop as an overreaction to some events. I could even see something like Anakin's fall having happened that made the Jedi Masters all overzealous about it... But there's zero indication that happened anywhere in the Old Republic era in any of the source material I've seen. Instead, we have cathar Jedi mates Sylvar and Crado. We had Nomi Sunrider married to her Jedi husband later becoming a Jedi, as well as her daughter Vima. Revan and Bastila were in some version of a relationship by canon, as SWTOR has Satele, their descendant (granddaughter maybe?). The only pre-existing support I'm aware of is Jolee Bindo in KOTOR 1 mentioning that his marriage was frowned on to some degree by the Council/Order - but he was kicked out of the Order for it or anything.
ReplyDelete... wasn't kicked out, rather. Heh. It just seems like that has built up more and more out of nowhere - probably because Lucas seemed to push it so hard in the dialogue from the prequel movies. Which is even more frustrating seeing how the actions of some more preachy characters in those very same movies shows us that attachments/relationships are, if not necessarily good for Jedi, at least unavoidable.
