State of the Games

Sorta looks like no offline roleplaying this week. We could maybe get three people together tonight (one likely later) and that's only about half the group. Looks like our second stab at the Dresden Files mechanics will wait a couple weeks.
Interestingly, it looks like a place is being opened up downtown that offers space for gaming. And they're planning to run Friday Night Magic. Sheesh, where was that when I actually played?

I picked up The Missing Link DLC for DXHR. Just getting it was challenging enough, as Steam insisted I verify my email address. Okay, that's simple click the link in the em-... waaaaait, this automated email has no link in it, only three garbled-looking characters in the body. While Steam Support (which requires setting up a whole other account) kicked back a form letter that wasn't terribly helpful, I changed my default mail for my Steam account and got something I could respond to finally. Whee. Then there was downloading it - but better a couple hours than a day or two.
I'm not really sure how far along I am. I dislike that it feels disjointed from the main story. Well, it is disjointed, it's a separate program with no carry-over, even though it takes place in the middle of the DXHR story. A ship and a sea base provide the scenery, feeling sort of claustrophobic, and I'd done a bit of repeated backtracking in the latter already. You're also in a combat zone almost the entire time - very little chatting to people here. The gameplay is familiar and solid. It's interesting to see some further threads to the other games, including Gary Savage and references at least to Bob Page. We'll see how it plays out later.

Game companies may insist they're releasing things "when they're done," but there's really no question PR plays a role. WoW 4.3 is likely to be out toward the end of the year, competing for attention with SWTOR. And as Blizzcon is about to kick off (tomorrow?), Bioware has apparently lifted the NDA for at least some press beta testers, so a number of sites are sporting TOR beta impressions. It's a dance that, like politics, can be fascinating to watch from a certain perspective. Or it can be annoying/disgusting. It depends on how you take it. There's enough interest in those I know that I probably will get TOR upon release, though my long-term expectations still hinge mostly on what happens with those I WoW with.

I've been eyeing the well-regarded Batman: Arkham City game that just came out, but I think I'll probably hold off on that. I didn't play Arkham Asylum either, so I don't feel story-compelled to see it through. It looks good, but I'll probably put it on a Christmas list or something.

I am eagerly awaiting Skyrim, though. Elder Scrolls games, even with their flaws, have always been enjoyable to me.
