Divinities
A much more in-depth look at ways and reasons to limit the influence of gods in a fantasy world than I've ever had the focus to write: http://www.campaignmastery.com/blog/monkeywrench/
I find the log in general to have a lot of good thinking about worldbuilding and running fantasy games. Those behind the blog seem to have a lot more time to put into such things than I did even at my peak. I find it hard to imagine getting into so much detail, but it makes for interesting reading - at least to me.

I find some of these options for dealing with the divine in an RPG to be suitable, particularly ones involving the number of members of a Faith = Divine power. What I don't particularly agree with is the involvement of gods being less of an impact when it's a personal face-to-face with the divine figure itself, especially for one of the Faithful. Physically being in the presence of the divine should be note-worthy and while within proximity to such a facet of power should have a profound effect on someone, even (or maybe especially so) on a member of a rival faith. However, some may wish gods to remain unreachable, even by the faithful, and act only through emissaries and other divine agents. Only upon death can a soul truly experience the agency of the divine. Until that time they only get messages, visions and angels here and there to answer their prayers.
ReplyDeleteAs a general comment on the blog articles: I don't always agree with the conclusions as I feel the answers are going to be dependent on the GM/players/group, but I'm almost always impressed by how much thought they put into it and all the angles that are considered. The questions they ask about things like "how do you keep gods from overwhelming a game" tend to be very good ones.
ReplyDeleteIt is food for thought, but tends to give me a headache. I keep wanting to join in just so I can be a voice of opposition, or to start a debate, because more often than not I find myself disagreeing. YMMV of course. :)
ReplyDeleteMy mileage does seem to vary quite a lot these days... Maybe it's a little sadistic of me, but I actually couldn't help but grin at the thought of you fuming at what is not exactly an active blog post, agonized by your inability to strike up and immediately argument on the subject at hand. ... Yeahhh. >.>
ReplyDeleteYou bad, bad person! ;)
