(WoW) Raid Time
Well, I was very glad to finally get Malygos out of the way. The final raid boss from the initial tier of raid content in Wrath had always given us a hard time just because it's so different to fight through the last chunk of the fight on drakes instead of using your own abilities. We wiped a couple times as people got used to that, but on our third attempt, we pulled it off. I was pleased to see my DoT on him stacked to 14 shortly before he went down, too.
Then... there was lots of confusion, but we pulled together a group theoretically capable of tackling the Lich King and gave it a try. Sadly, after several attempts, we didn't really do better than before - getting into Phase 2 once I think, with several people down already.
I wouldn't say I'm heartbroken or worked up over it, but I am subtly disappointed, mostly because I have no idea what to say or suggest to improve performance. It's very difficult to find points of failure when everyone is (or should be) focusing on what they're doing. And while I understand the end boss of an instance might be expected to be harder than the others, the difficulty curve between the beginning and end of Icecrown Citadel (or Ulduar for that matter) seems really, really crazy to me.
Without knowing how to do better, I'm left wondering how it's possible to do better. Most bosses that have roadblocked us suddenly turned easy after we accumulated a little better gear or the zone buff increased and everything clicked for us. But many of us are outfitted just about as well as we can with what we do and the zone buff is at max. That leaves some shining moment of epiphany when everything falls into place for the group, and I have trouble seeing it with so much going on through the fight. It seems we eight practice and get it (through frustration of failure) or we don't.
Our failed attempts, however, didn't lock us to the instance. So after trying for a while, we reorganized and took (mostly) alts through ICC from the entrance to the Upper Spire, downing Lord Marrowgar, Lady Deathwhisper, the Gunship, Saurfang (14 kills and he still hasn't dropped the bracers I want), Svalna, and enough additional trash to get a couple people the rep level they were after. More emblems and some good drops for alts. That's some productivity for the night, at least.
