Catching Up

Let's see here...

I could use more three-day weekends. Monday was nice and I got to have a most pleasant lunch with northawke, who I've not seen in quite some time (briefly at 2008's almost-disasterous Estrella War). It was good to catch up.

Tuesday eve was back to work and crazy. I seem to have about a 15% failure rate with some of the new software going in, and in this case it was on the first of seven laptops, so that roadblocked me for much of the night and left me scrambling when I could make headway.
I also managed to kill the company's phone system when I went to replace the batteries in the UPS supplying that computer. Afterward, I was told it wasn't so much my fault as the database would have been saved if the CMOS battery in the computer itself hadn't been virtually dead too. So that was going to happen whenever we replaced the other batteries.
Our weekly WoD game was postponed for the second week in a row due to lack of attendance. It gave us a chance to talk about the game which might help it some, but I'm not altogether convinced either. Between the delays and the frustration for multiple people... well, usually that's a sign that a game is soon to collapse, but we'll see.

Wednesday and Thursday have blown by, sometimes busy and sometimes very much not.

Tonight some work, though I'm hoping to go home early. I didn't get much in the way of a pre-work nap due to workers scraping/painting around windows and the front door at home. I miss the rest, but it's good to see something being done, even if it's "light" stuff right now. I believe they're starting with some of the simpler things while awaiting ordered material.

The upgrades at work continue in what seem like fits and spurts to me. More training next week, though it looks like mostly for one person. There are concerns about whether we're on track to go live with the next part come the beginning of August. It looks like there's an awful lot needing to be done yet - stuff that's out of our hands - yet we've been assured so far that we're on track. I'm characteristically skeptical.

The week saw a big storm over Blizzard's announced plans to intigrate their Real ID system on their soon-to-be new forums, showing the real name of everyone to post. After complaints across the "blogosphere" and (I understand) 50,000+ posts on the official thread on the matter, the company has decided this is a bad idea - or at least one whose time hasn't come. Giving up anonymity on the web isn't inherently bad, but pushing people who expect otherwise into it with little alternative (just don't post being the only other choice) just doesn't fly in this case. Score one for "the community," though I still suspect Blizzard wasn't as committed to the initial announcement as they made it sound.

I got a quote for new tires and... ouch. I don't remember it being that bad. $500-$900 seems more than I can recall having paid. Then again, it's been several years and I have a different vehicle. If they'd charged me that much to re-tire the pickup, I might have laughed about that being more than the value of the truck itself.
