(WoW) O.o
I don't usually talk much about the "blogosphere" in regards to WoW. There are some sites I hit regularly, and a few blogs I glance at, sure. One of the more recent ones added to that list is a blog by "Ferarro" with a lot of paladin advice - mostly Retribution and Holy, but the information has all seemed useful.
But... WTF?
When I saw the blog get locked down to invite-only, I though it might have been due to mention in one post shortly before about having done some testing on a private server (which is probably against the WoW TOS). Instead, I find the author has been outed as having used someone else's photo. And now the blog is unlocked and they're claiming ownership/authorship of it has changed repeatedly over the last few years. And other people are saying that's unlikely/impossible due to IP numbers associated with the activities behind it over time. Holy bejeezes. I know things can explode into drama at almost any time on the internet, but that's nuts.
I'm not sure I even want to think about all that, but it makes me wonder about the game information that's been presented by the blog. It... seems like it is probably no less sound and matches up with other sources, but it's also hard to say who originiated the information and the author has claimed behind-the-scenes (working for Blizzard) experience previously that would normally lend more credence to the advice but is now subject to doubt.

I know... that's pretty bizarre isn't it. But it makes sense now when Ferarro posted prior to the WotLK release about how she was going to take time off and basically live in a beach house for a while - but then not long thereafter there was a renewed activity of new posts and information and analysis.
ReplyDeleteWell, I suppose. I've only been following it since you pointed out to me, so if the "Dread Pirate Ferarro" story is true, I've probably only watched the work of the most recent one. I just... tend to give the benefit of the doubt at first blush and not think about things too deeply. Blogger/WoW-player a girl? Fine, whatever. But when it comes to light they've lied at least about the pictures, I sort of lose all respect for the person(s) behind it. The internet is great for being anonymous - just don't give out info you don't want people to have. Fabricating offends my morals. And that leaves me looking at the situation and thinking "Okay, so either there's one person who lied and I don't really respect as a person, but still probably has a decent grasp of the game numbers" or "there's seven such people." All else being equal, I tend to lean toward the simpler solution. In this case, I think that would be that this explanation is yet another lie. But... my opinion doesn't really make a difference and I don't even care too strongly about whether the blog is the result of one person's efforts or seven's. I may still reference the guides if they remain up, but I won't be spending much time on their (singular or plural) opinion/personal experience posts.
ReplyDeleteI must come out to you. I'm not really the man you think I am. I'm actually a ferret piloting an android model made from the DNA of Elvis Presly.
ReplyDeleteA Ferret? And here I though you might be sugar glider piloting an android model made from the DNA of Elvis Presly. >.>
