I've been taking a break of sorts, spending less time on due to 1) some daily quest burnout and 2) enough activity on the MUCK to warrant attention. My death knight has gained a few levels in the last week or two, but I'm not trying real hard there either.
Saturday rocked, though. Relatively early for us, we got a group together and went to hit the daily dungeons, both on heroic. Utgarde Pinnacle went pretty well, with one little wipe at Palehoof when he feared us and immediately killed the healer. Before getting to the first boss in Utgarde Keep, we had our hunter lose connection. After some discussion, we pressed on... and 4-manned the instance with no wipes. While a Protection warrior with some dps gear doesn't do a lot of dps, this confirmed heroic UK is cake. The back-to-back dungeons went quick, clean, and fun - that's exactly what I'd like to see when the new emblem rewards are in place.
This morning I heard about a guildmember who apparently got their account hacked. I only have second-hand information right now, but it sounds a lot like the scam talked about here and here. Oy. I'm just going to hug my authenticator and try to keep my common sense, thanks.
Guild Wars
I am pleased to see they recently made different PVE/PVP versions of ritualist spirit-summoning spells, and dropped the PVE versions' casting time to 3/4 of a second. This actually makes spirits usable in the kind of play I generally see. It was formerly 3 seconds, and I'd really only get use of those spells if we paused before pulling a group. Why it took this long is beyond me, but it gives me hope of actually finding a build I like for Killian (even if it may take an elite spell I can't get yet).
Furryfaire
Odd weekend. The overthrow of Tarantis back to a monarchy seems less likely. The S'yalin branch of the family is now into Naipon politics fully/officially. Vampires are annoying (especially with stealthed-in rules that have silly clauses). That's actually more in the way of major events than I can usually state.
P.S. I give ten minutes until Tashiro harps on the report of account hacking as a benefit of GW over WoW. Nine...

Apparently if you're stupid enough you can get your account hacked with an Authenticator. http://www.wow.com/2009/06/06/an-interview-with-a-scammer/#continued What do you do if there is an Authenticator on the account? Most people have taken off their Authenticators because the hacking rate went down. 50+ accounts, 0 Authenticators so far. That's sad. Do you have a way to get around the Authenticator? Actually yes. For the very FIRST login, I can get around it. So I have to change the password then or make a quick clean sweep of the account. Ah, how do you do it? Just enter the Authenticator code they put into my site.
ReplyDeleteYep. That's why I pack my common sense, too. I've got a pretty good track record when it comes to how much time I spend online and how few virus/malware infections I've seen. This is similar stuff. Never trust email/links/etc from untrusted sources even if they're made to look official. Just knowing that people do that helps keep one's guard up. It seems to me it'd be a little bit less certain than the interviewed person makes it sound. Because the code from the authenticator is partly time-based, they'd have to make use of it within about a minute of the number being generated. That strikes me as an awfully small window. But if a hacker is realtime-watching a player put their information in, then yeah, it'd be easy to turn right around and log in to their WoW account. An authenticator is a nice additional level of protection that can outright prevent a lot of hacking techniques, but it's not foolproof. Just like if someone is careless enough to give up all their personal information, someone else could use that to contact Blizzard, go through the steps to de-associate an authenticator from an account, and have a field day. In general, people need to be more cautious.
ReplyDelete*laughs* Honestly, I don't think I can comment on 'GW is superior' for this one. This is an aspect of WoW that doesn't have a parallel in GW. Sure, you can get really rare things in GW, but it is keyed to a specific account key, and 'binding' it to your account is ... let's say it is difficult. I should know, I have a playtest copy of GW: Prophesies, and if I had purchased the full version of GW through it, my Prophesies characters would have a cool 'glowing arms' effect. I tried to bind it to my current account, but since I'd activated the playtest copy already, no-can-do.
