(WoW) Holy Healing Priests, Batman!

I've had a secondary Holy spec on my priest for a little bit now. This weekend was the first time I actually made use of it, healing a heroic Utgarde Pinnacle run (and a few Icecrown group quests later).

Conclusion: It's not all that bad, though I'll need practice to be good.

I bit it on Svala due to... well, being completely unaware of an ability, actually. The adds that pop up when she does her Ritual of the Sword apply a DoT to you if you hit them with "direct damage" spells. As a tank, I've either avoided or ignored this. I don't think Consecrate counts. Holy Wrath might. Hammer of the Righteous might. So Sash probably picks up a couple stacks of it and goes on. With Reya, however, I jumped in and Holy Nova'd. Apparently that qualifies as direct damage, and I came out of the second (I think) Ritual taking 4-6 thousand damage per tick. Ow. So, I died, but the group took her down.

I believe we wiped once on trash before Gortok, then just made it through that boss. Potion, shadowfiend, hymn, and I was still just about zeroed out on mana at the end. The shadowcasters nailed me on the first run through to Skadi. That's not actually surprising. If we can get through that on our first attempt in any "new" configuration of characters, I consider that a big bonus. Ymiron actually went fine.

So that was pretty good. Our second tankadin gets some experience, and I get a little heroic healing under my belt. I feel better about it, though it may be a bit before I work out a good balance of casting and mana conservation.

  1. Not to be terribly obvious about it, but IMO... Healers heal. Period. Every time I've tried to do damage too, I get bit on the deal. With the possible exception of Arena, where I learned to burst when appropriate when we would call 'switch'.

  2. But... But... Just a little Shadow Word: Pain here and there... >.> Still, point taken. Thought I could help out with AOEing them to end the Ritual quicker, and Holy Nova also heals allies in the burst radius so it's not totally offense. Still, I like to think I've learned a lesson here.

  3. Heheee. Actually, on the nonelites in HoS last night, I popped out of tree to do a hurricane because Sasha was taking basically zero damage with just a Rejuv on her. And did you see what happened? I hit tranquility by mistake before I found the right button. :P That serves me right.

  4. Oh, on the 'sacrifice' boss in Old Kingdom I thought I could help dps the sacrifice down since there is zero else going on for me to do... and the massive burst you took made it very difficult to recover from, and we wiped. We wiped again due to other reasons but anyway, just another example of why I personally try to stay disciplined and not dps at all.

  5. I... have had similar (though less dramatic) difficulties. In Reya's holy spec, I have several healing spells bound to number keys that I'm accustomed to having my basic shadow attack spells on. Casting a healing spell on an enemy target that I'm trying to Mind Flay doesn't waste any cooldowns, but it doesn't actually do anything either. Mostly, though, that's tripped me up in group Icecrown quests rather than dungeons. Still, it's something to watch out for.
