(WoW) Do You Think They Learned Anything?

So my paladin's off doing PVP-flagging quests in Venture Bay on the weekend, and I see a drake fly by and hover near. While fighting one of the NPC Horde guards there, I look up to see a level 80 tauren death knight. I just know he's sitting there thinking, "Hey, a level 75 Alliance paladin. Target!" They didn't jump in right away, but let me keep fighting. I was at about 80% health and 20% mana when they dropped in to attack me.

I certainly wasn't about to start anything, but my tanking mindset certainly involves finishing it. I could have probably ran for Alliance guards, but no. We went at it. Granted, I used a potion and my Lay on Hands cooldown, but the tauren was the one on the ground when the dust settled. Five levels lower (plus the fact that level 80 opens up several tiers of better gear) and I still win one-on-one. I have to wonder if that particular player just sucks (more than I do) at PVP combat, or if there's some real class imbalance there. >.>

Regardless, I got quite a laugh out of that.

  1. That's pretty amusing, for one. As for class imbalance - Blizz developers have stated often that WoW pvp is not tuned for 1v1 confrontations. Some classes own others, without a doubt. I've not be interested enough in pvp since 3.0 to know what DK's dominate vs not. However, in analyzing the matchup I'd have to say you played to your strengths and the Tauren thought he could be you just by being 80, he took away none of your strengths. Paladins usually follow a predictable rule: when low on health, they bubble and full heal. Or they lay on hands. A savvy PvPer knows this and prepares for it... a properly timed strangulate could have shut down your ability to LoH and possibly have ended the fight. I'm not that great a theorycraft or analyzing the complexity of WoW class matchups, but it seems to me it's a tough fight for a DK. Tanks have major mitigation vs melee, which he is, and much of a DK's damage is based on diseases on the target, which Pallies cleanse off fairly easily. It's probably a tough fight for a DK. This is one reason why a lot of players I talk to avoid PvPing random Paladins, because it's frustrating (to them) to have to kill them 3 times (once, then after the bubble/heal, then after the LoH), and many classes can't survive that long. Anyway, Gratz! :D
