Of Plans
I've been asked (repeatedly) is I have plans for Memorial Day, cryptic as that has been. Memorial Day? Sheesh. I don't have any notable plans this year at this point. There aren't any trips on my schedule. I blew a fair chunk of vacation time going to Florida, after all. I still haven't "recovered" from last Estrella, so I've no plans to go this time.
And, of course, there's the financial aspect. I'm fairly certain my job is stable, but the economy is sucking and there's no telling that that's going to do all around. I would like to get an HDTV soon (amusingly, more to have clearer small type in PS3 games than for movie quality). I'm approaching the level of "need" as far as a new bed - oh, I can still sleep on the one I have, but it's ten years old or so, been used heavily as extra seating, sags seriously in the middle, and actually has a hole in it I discovered a few weeks back. That's at least a few hundred dollars there, possibly a good bit more. We haven't yet paid the extra cost on our exterior repair project... which is going even slower with all the snow, naturally. I've been going back and forth on whether the truck could use a new battery. It has some sort of electrical issues at least, so there's probably a trip to the shop in the future. And while I didn't spend much on the road, Christmas presents added up pretty good.
So... yeah, I don't have any plans, save trying to make sure I stay afloat while plinking away at repairs, replacements, and whatever other costs come up for a time.
One little plan has panned out. After a week of flipping through documentation and consulting old notes, I've (re)learned a passing knowledge of MPI. I've never been good with programming languages, and this is one (albeit limited to certain functionality on MUCKs) - it makes a perfect sort of sense that has nothing to do with common language.
Still, I relearned how I set up one-command spellcasting on an old character of mine and I learned some new tricks along the way. There's very little tolerance for mistakes, but I should be able to make up some interesting little toys. Just need more ideas what toys to make. Heh. I think the obsession (and accomplishment) of figuring out how to do it may carry more lasting weight than what I actually do with it. Of course, a year or two down the line and I may just forget it all again and have to start from scratch next time I have an idea.
I received Valkyria Chronicles for Christmas and I've been making slow progress through the game when it fits into what's going on. It's a very charming little tactical game. I'm a little disappointed by the amount of time spent going back and forth between modes (story/reference/training/research/etc.) and the learning curve can be a little harsh in places (seriously, you almost have to do some missions with expectation of failure just to figure out how to beat them), but it's a lot of fun to actually play.
World of Warcraft continues. No fast progress there with my paladin, due to trying to level together with two other people and having our schedules rarely coincide. That's what other characters are for, I suppose. Grinding away for reputation with my priest and keeping up with inscription training as a warlock. I've taken some breaks here and there, but the Wrath content isn't yet "old and boring" to me, and I've seen a lot of genuinely impressive stuff.
