(no subject)

Life rolls on. It's already November. Oy. Some of the days feel long, but the weeks and months are going by all too quickly. It's time to think about Christmas presents. It's time to be solidifying plans for January's trip.

It's more than a bit overwhelming to stop and think about it.

But, in other news, I finally got around to pulling a book from my pile of 'unread and should remedy that' novels. So it was that I came to read "Kushiel's Dart." It was not what I expected. It was longer and slower to read. The reviews I'd seen on the web led me to expect graphic sex scenes that weren't there (though subject matter may still make some people uncomfortable). There was much more politics, and a far grander scale to the adventure than I ever would have guessed.

In the end, it was better than I would have guessed, and I offer thanks unto those who recommended it. I may be getting soft, but I was move to both laugh and cry (often at the same time) at several parts of the story.

Now, if only my neck weren't still sore from sitting in the same position for hours on end. ;)

  1. Heh. The way I've described that trilogy is as "tightly plotted and incredibly complex. There are some very graphic sex scenes, but there is no *gratuitous* sex." It's amazing how many people I confuse with that. They're just plain well-written, and I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it. The other two just get better, the third one in particular.

  2. Seems an apt description. The sequels are now on my vague "to read" list, but I'm not ready to jump into another of them just yet. I need to recover from that one first. And... I suppose it's a matter of perspective (for I have surely read far "worse"), but I still can't point to any sex scene I felt was particularly graphic. Some of the subjects might normally warrant that, but the presentation of it really never seemed that way to me. Eh, but maybe I'm explaining that poorly, or maybe the internet has just warped my poor little mind. I wouldn't rule out either possibility. ;)

  3. I vote warped mind. ;) Not lurid, mind you. Just graphic. Then again, I've read all three, and I'm sure some of the instances I'm thinking of are in the second and third books, though I'll be darned if I can sort them all out.

  4. Okay, I won't argue. :)
