Every now and then ...
... I am reminded that I'm really not paid enough.
So I got called this morning at 6:20 or so. This isn't all that much earlier than my alarm clock is set for, but it's at least an hour before I expect myself to be at all coherent. Mysteriously disappearing desktop icons preventing our early morning circulation employee from finding the program she needed - something I could have walked her through fixing had I truly been awake. Of course, my oversight wasn't apparent until I was throwing myself through a quick show. By that time, it hardly seemed worthwhile to go back to sleep, so I just finished my abbreviated routine and got myself to work to fix it myself. Simple enough.
'course then I discover our internet connection is spotty and our mail/web servers are unresponsive. This, in spite of what several people seem to think, is usually beyond my ability to do anything about. I placed calls with our ISP. Unfortunately, it suffers from "two guys in a room" syndrome - where an internet-based company is run solely by, you guessed it, two guys in a room. ... Okay, to be fair they have more than one room and there's a girl that sometimes answers the phones. Feh. I wish I could just accept a lack of control and brush it off, but I never quite manage that. Instead, I linger between trying not to worry and just plain worrying because there's a problem I can't *do* anything about.
A quarter after eight, more than an hour after *I* got to work, they get in to work and have things running again. They don't even call to explain, rather our Online Services manager has to call them and ask what happened. ... Apparently someone left a network cable unplugged there last night while moving equipment around.
Gonna be one of those days...
