Rooftop Dueling!

Thankfully not in real life. This week's session was primarily action. Perhaps that makes up for last week. It was also a lesson in certain facets of the rules. While settled in at Romero Villanova's home, some party members having just gotten to sleep, Sebastian heard figures moving about that didn't belong. Confronting them, he found a group of masked and cloaked people with weapons. A shrill whistle had the rest of the PCs up and scrambling into the hall half-dressed and half-armed. This first engagement wasn't too bad. One got in a lucky hit on Sebastian, wounding him, but the others were taken down by Rufina and (mostly) Adam. Upon collapsing, the figures turned into wooden puppets not unlike the coach driver some sessions back. Foul magic indeed. Just as Rufina was inspecting Sebastian's wound, however, a more dangerous figure made his appearance by crashing in the window, grabbing Phedre, and swinging back out onto a rooftop. "If you wish to know

After a Couple Weeks Off...

Odd session. While we were mostly awaiting a duel between Lucien and an unnamed antagonist, his player didn't show 'til last so the fight was entirely off-screen. That's very unfortunate, as it shaded things for the rest of the group. With a bar brawl breaking out and friends of the duelist eager to mix it up with those at the table with Lucien, everyone stood ready. Rufina, though, lept to a diplomatic approach, threatening the would-be assailants with some local authority she didn't really seem to have. Things were tense, but she talked them down much to the GM's displeasure. Talking one's way out of a bar fight, after all, isn't exactly the hallmark of swashbuckling adventure. This scene put Sylvia in an awkward position - one I, in retrospect, did not handle as well as I could have. With most of the conversation in a language she didn't understand, she was at a disadvantage as far as reparte. Plus, being very familiar with the war-torn state o

Blood, Sweat, and Tears

Or at least two out of three. I recall much frustration, but no actual tears over the last couple weeks. So after going through several steps, I sent back both the CPU and motherboard for exchange. Thanks to a prompt return setup, I had the new parts to install by Thursday night and a new, functional computer Friday. Yay. No problems since then, and it's nice to have a freshly-installed operating system.

Trials

Building one's own computer Advantages: Experience, Lower cost (usually), Choice of components Disadvantages: Having to troubleshoot things oneself Urgh. Haven't had this big a problem in the past, though. Thing won't even POST. Fans move, there's power getting to drives, the motherboard light comes on... but nothing on screen and no beeps. I read about similar problems with this particular motherboard and the particular RAM I had, but acquiring a stick of RAM listed in the motherboard's manual didn't help either. I've been able to rule out the graphics card by proving it worked in one of the newer machines at work (the only place I have access to a PCIE slot). This all seems to leave three possibilities: 1) Still the memory: The extra stick I got was randomly bad as is fouling up my diagnosis. 2) Part of the motherboard: Usually when I hear about a 'bad' motherboard, power doesn't get through it to lights and fans, but I can't say f

Catching Up (or Cuts Galore)

Things feel busy at home. In truth, I can't imagine they really are much moreso than usual. But still, there are some things going on. My computer is futzing up. Actually, it's not as serious as it sounds. The power switch does not always turn on the computer. In fact, it usually fails to do so. I can push that button over and over for fifteen minutes before the thing finally comes on, and I'm afraid it will get worse, so I've actually taken to leaving the thing on more than usual. After some investigation, I suspect the actual switch in the case more than any of the main components of the system, but I can't get to that without breaking plastic. Urgh. But this has just led to me fast-tracking a project I was starting on anyway... I'm making a new computer. Some parts I have, some I'll recycle, others are on the way. I'm hoping the case and CPU fan live up to the hype, because I want something quieter than what I've got now. Our mid-week rolepl
